Artifact 1

A Tangled Tale by Lewis Carroll

Better known for his books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll, aka the mathematician Charles Dodgson, composed a series of word problems in the form of short stories as part of a monthly periodical, and invited readers of the magazine to send in their answers. He created this in the hopes of making math more fun for children. There are questions ranging in topic from logic riddles to linear algebra, geometry, etc.

The word problems in A Tangled Tale are rather complicated; I would not recommend a primary or junior student try the problems. The problem I shared in the pictures would fit in with the grade 7/8 curriculum under the proportional relationship section of Number Sense and Numeration, as it is a question requiring the calculation of rate.

I chose this artifact to show my commitment of incorporating math and literacy as much as I can, and to show that I plan to play to my strengths as much as possible in the classroom. The study of literature will always be my first love, both personally and professionally, and I hope to incorporate storytelling elements into the math classroom to make it more fun and interesting.
