Prodigy
Prodigy is quite a wonderful classroom tool, as it is a
fun RPG that incorporates all strands of the Ontario math curriculum into it.
Students can customize their character, and then do a diagnostic assessment
that places them at an appropriate level in the game, so the math questions
they encounter are sufficiently challenging for them. Then as students master
skills, the questions can become more difficult.
Because Prodigy does a
diagnostic assessment placing the player at their appropriate level, this game
can be used as many grade levels. This is particularly good for students who
are struggling or are on IEPs, because they can play the same game as everyone
else, but it will be adjusted based on their needs.
Prodigy is already being used in my placement classroom
but I intend to continue to use it in future placements. The student who uses
it the most is on an IEP (has limited grade 2 expectations), so when there are
certain activities she is not able to participate in, she either works out of
her math binder or plays Prodigy.
This is a game I would also recommend that parents have their child play at
home. Students love video games, so it would be great to put that interest to
good use and have them play a video game that will improve their math skills.
